Report a change of circumstances

Pension age claimants or working age on housing benefit

Both claimant and partner must be of pensionable age or working age housing benefit claimants (this will also update any council tax support).

Working age and universal credit claimants

Anyone who is working age not claiming housing benefit.

If you are claiming benefits, you must tell us immediately if there is a change in your circumstances such as:

  • someone moving in or out of your household
  • if you or anyone living with you becomes a student, goes into a nursing home, goes into prison, changes or leaves a job
  • any changes in income or your savings
  • if your job changes or you take on an additional job
  • if the amount of rent you pay changes
  • if you move house
  • if you are away from your home address for more than 4 weeks

You must make sure you tell us about these changes. Don't rely on someone else to pass on your details to us.

It is an offence not to tell us about any change of circumstances that affects your benefits.

We may take court action against you if you don’t tell us about a change in circumstances.

If we pay you too much benefit, you will have to pay it back.

Moving House

You must tell us immediately if you move house as this could affect your Council Tax Support or Housing Benefits.

Moving within our district

If you are receiving benefits payments from us and are moving to a property within our district, you will need to complete a change of address form.

  • your new address
  • the date you moved or are moving
  • details of anyone who will be living with you at your new address

If you are renting, you will also need to complete a property detail form and return to our office with all relevant proof prior to moving or within the month you move.

Moving outside our district

If you are receiving benefits payments from us and are moving to a property outside our district, you will need to complete a change of address form.

You can check if your property is in our district on GOV.UK.
